Gay/Straight Alliance of Guelph
didn't want this account to go down in flames in the coming lj-purge. So this is a safety post.
I really wish we still used this comm... though I'm getting most of my anti-homophobia fix from ontd_political
Y'all should join the party ;)
Ellen DeGeneres is getting married
now that California has legalized gay marriage. Yay California! Smooth move guys, and such great photo ops :)
"The Roman Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is not sinful but homosexual acts are, and is opposed to gays being allowed to adopt children." - Reuters
Ok, so the last bit I knew already... but I had no idea that the Catholic Church doesn't think homosexuality alone is sinful.
and Part Two
But honestly lady, calling the cops on the guys who were making out in public? GET A LIFE! *grumble grumble grumble*
Still, a lot of those people were really nice and sweet. Go them :)
Evolution as a Fact and Theory
Dr. Laurence Moran discusses the evidence for evolution as well as the mechanisms which explain it. Some deny the truth of evolution, claiming that it is "just a theory". Others have the mistaken impression that there is debate in the scientific community as to whether evolution occurred at all. This event will examine the different theories and mechanisms (eg. natural selection) used to explain the fact of evolution (that is, that species have changed throughout time and are all related via common decent). Dr. Laurence A. Moran:
Laurence Moran obtain his B.Sc. degree from Carleton University, followed by his Ph.D. at Princeton University. He worked for several years at the University of Geneva, and is now a Professor in the department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. His main research interest is in molecular evolution and evolutionary theory. Dr. Moran's lab studies a group of heat-shock genes known as the HSP70 multigene family, and his lab has produced many publications on this gene family. He has also been an author on several editions of the textbook Principles of Biochemistry. Dr. Moran has a long standing interest in the evolution/creation controversy and is a contributor for the online newsgroup Talk Origins. He maintains his own blog on science and atheism at sandwalk.blogspot.com, is on the board of consultants for Skeptics Canada, and is a faculty adviser for the U of T Secular Alliance. This lecture will explore some of the main principles of evolution and address some of the common misconceptions over evolutionary theory. In particular, Dr. Moran will differentiate between the concepts of scientific facts and scientific theories as they relate to evolution.

I'm writing to you from Out On The Shelf, the queer resource centre in downtown Guelph.
Today we had a very exciting visit from two patrons who are interested in starting a similar resource centre and support group in South Hampton, where they are faced with serious oppression.
It would be great if you could show solidarity, maybe by providing your own stories on starting the GSA and things you've learned through your GSA experiences.
I have email contact information for them. If you could provide any help or advice at all, you can get in touch with us at:
Thanks so much!
Learn why a secular democracy SHOULD NOT publicly fund catholic or other faith based schools and how we can fix the current situation.
